This evening I want to continue to explorer our identity in Christ. This is important because who we think we are determines what we do. Using amongst others, the example of Gideon, Iwant to demonstrate how he had allowed the world to determine his identity, but also how he found his real identity.

If I were to ask you whether you'd like to receive a miracle or blessing from God, I guess most of you would reply "a miracle". But tonight I want to examine why God's blessing is better than a miracle, and how we can live in God's abundant blessing.

The Covenant with Abraham

Someone has asked me why our key text has a statement before it in their bible hinting it shouldn't be there because it does not appear in "the most reliable early manuscripts". Tonight I will start by answering why it can legitimately be included and is reliable. Then I'm going to illustrate that the Abrahamic covenant has always been a covenant all about grace; and that grace is not based upon man's goodness but upon God's goodness.

When I started preparing this Sunday's message I did so with the intention of beginning to share an illustration from the life of Gideon demonstrating that his ministry was nothing to do with him, but all about God. But then I realised his story links into an expectation for miracles. Over the next couple of months I want to take a journey that will lead us into being a church where we match up with God's word.

Nehemiah 8 - The Joy of the Lord is your Strength

So by Chapter 8, the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt, and order had been restored. You'd have thought the people would have been full of rejoicing, but instead they were down in the dumps, weeping and crying. Nehemiah addresses the people, and declares, "the joy of the Lord is your strength". This Sunday evening we are going to consider how we too can know the joy of the Lord that can make us strong.

Nehemiah 6 - Dealing with Distractions

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem is nearly finished, but Nehemiah faces distractions that threaten to pull him away from finishing the job. This Sunday night we learn how Nehemiah remained focussed when so many things threatened to compromise the work.

Nehemiah 5 - Trouble and Strife

A month in, and the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalmen has come to a halt. This time is it not threats from without, but trouble and strife from within. There's hunger, there's high taxes, there's no money to pay the mortgage, and as a result the people are at one another's throats. Nehemiah is angry, but calmly addresses the situation. This Sunday night we're going to learn from Nehemiah's example of how to deal with injustices and complaints.

In Nehemiah 4 there is opposition to building the walls. There is ridicule and there are threats to their lives from all corners. This Sunday evening I'm going to look at the same passage of Scripture as I did last week, but this time with a focus upon the prayer strategy of Nehemiah.

We left chapter 3 of Nehemiah with the workers rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem zealously. By chapter 4, discouragement is setting in. They were being ridiculed; they were worn out and ready to give up. This Sunday evening I want to look at the characteristics of discouragement, how we can avoid it, and what to do when we find ourselves sinking into it.

The third chapter of Nehemiah reminds me of some of the long lists of names found in genealogies in such places as Chronicles and other parts of the Bible. The temptation is to skip such lists, (especially when the names are hard to pronounce) but all Scripture is inspired, and this chapter is no exception. This Sunday I want to attempt to glean some principles for building that will be useful as we consider our approach to building the church spiritually and physically.
